Rust 'n' Rot Pigment Set Tutorial

Tutorial for using our Rust 'n' Rot Pigment set.

Introduction

Using pigments in scale model are very easy and it also replicate super realistic effects. Throughout the history of model building, pigment application are very common practice.

This guide outlines a structured workflow using Becky Customizer Rush 'n' Rot pigment set. This pigment set are consist of 3 different tone of rusty effect.

- Light Rust
- Mid Rust
- Dark Rust.

Methodology of creating rusty effect

Rust and rot surface on metal part are actually make out of various tone of dark brown and light yellow.

Dark rust usually consist of larger area of the rusty surface, the bottom layer of the surface. So we can apply this layer first, follow by mid rust and lastly light rust.

This method are suggestion, you can apply the pigment as you see fit and preferences.

Surface Preparation

Pigment stick easily on matte or slightly textures surface. Prime the part or paint it with matte color before apply the pigments. You can even use metal effect prior to rust pigment.

Recommended surface condition:

  • Matte or satin finish
  • Fully cured paint layer
  • Clean, free of oils or dust

Apply directly

Rust 'n' Rot Pigments set can be use directly from container. Transfer pigment powder with cotton bud or soft brush on to model part. 

Apply dark rust then follow by mid rust and lastly light rust.

Apply pigment fixer, let the capillary action do the work, make sure all the pigment are soak with pigment fixer, this is to make sure the pigments doesn't fall off. It will still be rub off so reduce touching your weather model kits. It's the flaky and dusty look that give the realistic nuance.

Top coat are optional, keep it super light to avoid altering the pigment color.

Mix in Pigment Fixer

Another method of using pigments are by mixing it with pigment fixer. This method will generate a different outcome, can be apply with fine brush, and create rusty streaks along the surface. Wet pigment also flow easily into groove, you can remove excessive solution with tissue or cotton bud before it dry. 

Wait for the fixer to dry and not require to add anymore fixer.

Optional step: Apply top coat / clear coat on the pigment. Be careful not to over spray, as the top coat MIGHT alter the color of the pigment.
